Start preparing for the exam no later than eight weeks before your exam date.
Practicing as much as possible in English reading, listening, speaking, and writing can help you feel prepared and confident on test day.
There are three or four reading parts in the Reading section. There are 12-14 questions for each track. You have 60-80 minutes to answer all the questions in the section.
The Listening section contains questions about academic conversations and long conversations where the speaking style is natural. You can take notes on audio material throughout the entire exam. The Listening section consists of: four to six talks, each three to five minutes long, six questions for each talk, 60-90 minutes, two to three dialogues, each three minutes long, five questions for each dialogue, 60-90 minutes
The total duration of the writing section is 50 minutes. You are prompted to write a response to two writing tasks: the integrated Writing task and the independent Writing task. Integrated Writing task (20 minutes) – read a short piece and listen to a short speech. Then write in response to what you have read and listened to. Independent Task (30 minutes) – write an essay in response to a Writing topic.
Your recorded responses are sent to the ETS Scoring Network area, where three to six approved people score them as a whole on a scale ranging from 0 to 4. The average score of the six tasks is converted into a scaled score from 0 to 30. Raters don't expect your answers to be perfect, and even high-scoring answers can have some errors. Your pronunciation doesn't have to be like a native speaker. The raters measure the effectiveness of your communication and your ability to perform the tasks assigned to you.
The Speaking section is approximately 20 minutes long and includes six questions. The first two questions are called “speaking stand-alone tasks” because you are asked to reflect entirely on your own ideas, thoughts, and experiences when answering them. The remaining four questions are called “integrated Speaking tasks”; because it requires you to combine your English language skills (listening and speaking or listening, reading, and speaking) just as you would in or out of a classroom. You speak into the microphone in your headset and your responses are recorded and sent to the ETS Scoring Network, where they are scored by approved people.
Writing responses as a whole are scored on a scale of 0-5. The average score of the two tasks is converted into a scaled score from 0 to 30. You are not expected to write a comprehensive essay on a specialist topic, your response is considered a first draft. You can get a high score with a composition that contains some mistakes.
